Description:
While many painters work live in front of their subject, working in the studio from sketches and photos
is the norm. In this intensive workshop, we will explore the optimum way to shoot for and creative ways
to compose paintings from existing photos. Whether slides, photos or digital, knowing how the camera
“sees” and records information (from color, value, temperature shifts and more), overcoming visual
obstacles and making your paintings “sing” is the focus. Other topics to be covered are overcoming
color shifts, composition, and making your painting look like you did not use photos at all! Much more
will be packed into this two and a half day studio excursion. Instructor demos, participant exercises,
and as much time painting from your own photos as possible. Personalized one-on-one time with the
instructor at your easel. Other questions or pastel issues? We’ll try to cover those too!
Intermediate Level
Any subject: Landscape, Still-Life, Figurative or Portraiture

CLASS DESCRIPTION:
Your best marketing tool as an artist is to have high-quality photos of your work. In this
four-hour workshop, you will learn the basics of photography that will help you take
images of artwork that show it off to its best advantage.
You will learn different ways to set up the photos – how to use backdrops, light tables,
light tents, and composition – and how to light different types of artwork, to enhance
texture and eliminate glare. You will also learn what those buttons, dials and menu
settings on your camera mean – and how to make them work for you to produce better
photos.
This is a hands-on workshop! Participants should bring two or three pieces of art to
photograph, camera, and a tripod – any digital camera is fine. The instructor will bring
lighting, backdrops, light tent and other essentials.
The instructor, Lisa Schnellinger, is a photographer and teacher in North Georgia and has
taught workshops in 20 countries around the globe.
Her photography has appeared in numerous US and international publications and web sites
since 1979, an important element of her career as an editor, writer, and journalism trainer.
She has conducted workshops, coached and mentored hundreds of individuals in 18 countries
on every aspect of journalism, including photography, page design, writing, and management,
and has written four manuals that have been used in dozens of countries.
In North Georgia she has given seminars and practical training on how to photograph artwork, how to
use online tools to show art and photography, and how to produce a personal photo book. She also
gives private lessons on all aspects of photography and related computer skills.
Lisa and her husband Tom Willard settled in northern Georgia last June, after working in Afghanistan,
Dubai and Timor-Leste from 2002-2007. She has given numerous interviews and presentations about
her work overseas, and raises money for a girls school in Afghanistan.

Layering glaze Techniques: Susan DeMay
March 2010 10am - 4pm and 10am - 2pm - Potluck Sat evening at Wild Child
Min 5 students Max 10
Cost $195.00 Must register by June 8th
Students would need to bring any kind of functional wares, as my techniques are primarily for pots
In this workshop intermediate and advanced glazing techniques - which incorporate mostly dipping and
pouring -- will be taught and will yield a variety of motifs. These different images will be created using a
number of glazes, often in combination with wax and tape resists. Several glazes will be applied to a
single piece with the goal of incorporating the imagery and form in a harmonious way. Imagery will in
some cases be abstract, such as melting bands of color or geometric shapes, and in other cases,
natural images of flowers, trees, leaves, and entire landscapes will be created. The full palette of glazes
will include bright colors, earth tones, and neutrals, and will be used in a controlled way to explore
different color schemes and create a distinctive look. Not only will the instructor demonstrate and fire
works that will be critiqued during the workshop, but students will also be given time to try out the new
techniques. Helpful handouts with glaze recipes included will be provided -- the workshop is packed
with helpful and technical information for getting good and reliable results. Discussion and glaze table
set-up and firing procedures will also be covered. Please bring 10-12 bowls, plates, no vases
Carving a dual career that spans over two decades, Susan DeMay has shared her knowledge of clay
with her students at Vanderbilt University, while maintaining her professional ceramics studio, Creek
Ferry Pottery, in Smithville, TN. With the help of her studio assistants, DeMay’s professional career has
remained uninterrupted - from a production line of tabletop wares; to vases, tile projects and wall-
mounted sculptures. Experimenting with form and electric-fired glazes, DeMay’s work retains a
distinctive, vividly-colored appearance that garners exhibit opportunities both regionally and nationally.
Artist Statement
“My handmade works in clay materialize in two directions - the functional production pieces and the fine
art pieces. The fine art pieces, most of which are constructed using slabs of clay, take on a more
unusual organic form inspired by modern painting, glass blowing, quilt patterns, nature and personal
experiences. My choices have evolved over time, during the creation of a long series of work based on
the marriage between craft techniques and aesthetic decisions.”
Pottery: Fong Choo-- TBA
Fong Choo is a Singapore-born American studio potter and teacher who creates miniature sculptural
teapots - some no larger than an egg. Fong graduated from Warren Wilson College in Swannanoa, NC,
in 1988, and in 1993 received a BA in business and art at the University of Louisville (KY). He has been
adjunct professor and artist-in-residence at Bellarmine University in Louisville since 1990. His work has
received numerous awards including national Best in Shows and Awards of Excellence.
